Title I PartA funding

The high level difference in these funds compared to the traditional Title I funds is that the ARRA guidance asks to improve education for academically at-risk students and to close achievement gaps for students in Title I schools by serving more students under Title I-A and to boost the quality of Title I services. This is the first 50% of the total ARRA Title I part A funds that are earmarked. Total of $5B is to be distributed on 30 Sep 2009.

How is it awarded

No application is needed for the first 50 percent allocation to states. The LEAs must be in the process of receiving the funds from their respective states from the first installment.

Suggested uses of the fund

  • Improve teaching and staff collaboration around student data
  • Train educators on data driven decision making
  • Launch new research-based instructional programs, additional learning time for students, and intensive professional development for teachers
  • Offer summer programs in Title I schools that give students the leg up to be successful in essential courses such as 9th grade algebra and college-preparatory classes
  • Strengthen early learning
  • Using longitudinal data systems to drive continuous improvement efforts focused on improving achievement in Title I schools

Obligation to commit

LEAs must obligate 85 percent of the Title I Part A ARRA funds by 30 Sep 2010 and remaining by 30 Sep 2011.
